Initially, when I reviewed this album I gave it four stars. Night Visions got three before I bumped both to five stars. Imagine Dragons' music, in my opinion, grows on you better than that of any other artist.
I gave Night Visions three stars because on a lyrical level, I didn't like a lot of the songs, but those songs grew on me. With this album the only song I didn't like was Dancing in the Dark, and I still don't really like it. The main reason for dropping a star was the electronic sound. Mind you, I am all about synth and modern electronics; it gives me an energy which acoustic and '80s style electronics don't. However, the artist has to do it right; in contrast to OneRepublic's Oh My My, this style didn't seem to fit with Imagine Dragons.
Before I review a song, I listen to it all the way through, and before I review an album, I listen to at least 80% of the songs all the way through. In the case of Evolve, I streamed the full album on Spotify all the way through. However, after buying four songs from the album, a recent promotional deal put the other seven songs at around $3.50, or fifty cents apiece. I bought the album, and it has really grown on me. I may even like it more than Night Visions.
